Lenormand — Petit et Grand

Although the deck bears the name of Marie Anne Lenormand (1772–1843), a famous Parisian cartomancer, it is established that she did not design it herself. The first commercial decks bearing her name appeared in Germany and France around 1845, after her death, to capitalize on her reputation. The Petit Lenormand with 36 cards has established itself as the standard version, using symbols derived from popular card games of the 18th century. The Grand Lenormand with 54 cards is an enriched version, less common, with more complex allegorical images. The classic motifs of the 19th century belong to the public domain, although many recent illustrated editions remain protected.

The Petit Lenormand (36 cards) lends itself to short readings — 3, 5, or 9 cards — where each symbol is read in interaction with its neighbors. The queen technique is the Grand Tableau: the 36 cards arranged in a grid of 4 rows of 9, for a panoramic reading of a period. Significant cards (the Rider, the Woman for the consultant) are located and the surroundings are analyzed. The Grand Lenormand (54 cards) follows a similar logic, but its finer allegories require in-depth knowledge. The reading is more literal than tarot: it speaks of facts, people, places.

Lenormand excels in practical questions: love, professional situation, housing, family relationships. Its strength lies in the precision of its direct symbols: where tarot opens a wide space, Lenormand tends to clearly designate a situation or a person. The Grand Tableau allows for a single glance at the major dynamics of a period. Like any divination system, it is approached as a support for reflection and entertainment.
