Thoth Tarot

The tarot of Kabbalah and alchemy, an esoteric masterpiece of the 20th century.

Tarot78 cards (22 trumps, 56 minors)1938–1943England

Designed by Aleister Crowley and painted by Lady Frieda Harris, the Thoth Tarot fuses astrology, Kabbalah, and projective geometry into 78 cards of rare depth.

Origins & history

The Thoth Tarot was born between 1938 and 1943 from the collaboration between Aleister Crowley, a British occultist and founder of Thelema, and painter Lady Frieda Harris. Crowley wrote the Book of Thoth (1944), which explains the symbolism of each card. Harris, initiated into Rudolf Steiner's projective geometry, imbues the illustrations with a shifting, almost hypnotic perspective. The cards cleverly integrate the attributions of the Golden Dawn, Hebrew numerology, zodiac signs, and planets, making this tarot a compendium of Western esoteric thought. Commercially published in 1969, it has become a reference for advanced practitioners. (Work still under copyright — images not reproduced here.)

How it works

The Thoth retains the structure of 78 cards: 22 trumps — sometimes renamed, such as 'Lust' for Strength or 'Adjustment' for Justice — and 56 minors in four suits (Wands, Cups, Swords, Disks). Each card carries precise astrological and Kabbalistic inscriptions. Readings often occur through structured spreads like the Celtic Cross. Interpretation requires some familiarity with the Kabbalistic tree of life, although intuitive approaches remain accessible. Bright colors and geometric symbols facilitate multi-level readings.

What this reading brings

The Thoth is valued for its ability to reveal deep dynamics and invisible forces of a situation. Where other tarots describe events, it maps inner states and processes of transformation. It is suitable for those seeking to understand underlying mechanisms rather than obtaining binary answers. For lovers of rich symbolism, it is a tool for divination and personal development of remarkable power.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Thoth Tarot suitable for beginners?

It is more accessible with some background in esoteric symbolism. Its dense iconography rewards those who explore it gradually, starting with the trumps before approaching the minors.

Difference with the Marseille Tarot?

The Marseille is rooted in the medieval European tradition with stylized figures. The Thoth incorporates Kabbalah, astrology, and sacred geometry into very colorful illustrations for a more esoteric reading.
