Romani Oracle (Gypsy)

The Romani peoples have developed a rich culture of divination over the centuries — palm reading, dream interpretation, cartomancy, natural signs. This tradition is primarily oral and familial, without standardized written codification. It was in the 19th and 20th centuries that European publishers formalized decks inspired by this tradition under the names 'Gypsy oracle' or 'Tzigane.' Old editions, when no longer protected, belong to the public domain; however, many contemporary editions remain under copyright. The current Romani Oracle is thus a hybrid object, nourished by a living tradition and reinterpreted by modern creators.

It is traditionally used with cross or fan spreads, inherited from popular European cartomancy. The cards represent archetypal figures — the Traveler, the Wise Old Woman, the Child — and natural symbols: the Moon, the Stars, Fire. The reading emphasizes the interactions between figures rather than isolated interpretation. Some practitioners use a seven-card spread for the week. The tradition insists on reading the whole: the meaning of a card is constructed in dialogue with those surrounding it.

It invites a return to wisdom of the moment and adaptability. It readily speaks of human relationships — love, friendships, rivalries — and major transitions: relocations, encounters. Its warm iconography, focused on nature, makes it immediately relatable. History enthusiasts find a bridge to a little-known and often caricatured tradition, precious to rediscover as folk wisdom.
